On May 26th Na Mea Hoʻokani hosted the live music celebration at the inaugural Makalauna an Annual Gathering in Celebration to Honor “Gabby!”. Below is a poem written by our very own Mahealani Harris and some photos from the event.
Na Mea Ho‘okani’s Tribute
to Gabby Pahinui
A May day in Waikiki brought sunshine to grateful hearts,
Though it rained in the city and other island parts.
There on the Beachwalk, Na Mea Ho`okani played,
Enchanting tourists and locals by music they made.
The mele to Gabby Pahinui echoed throughout
A special celebration, no doubt.
Gabby was a symbol to the avid guitar player,
And rose to great heights as a slack key slayer.
From his humble home on a Waimanalo street,
Where musicians came to sit at his feet.
His featured grandson sang along with Na Mea’s voice
Honoring Pahinui as their special choice.
There were beautiful girls who danced from Halau.
And all wanted more when their hula was pau.
Conch shells and oli and the Hawaiian touch
Were truly appreciated and valued so much.
All were there for a glorious day
Where Na Mea Ho’okani came to play.
